Giving your spouse or partner a sensual massage can rejuvenate a relationship and reduce stress from a hard day at work.  Massage has been proven to relax tightened muscles, and also to alleviate stress (when done appropriately).  Fortunately the human body is very forgiving, and most people will like a massage even if you’re no good at it.  For all those people out there who are no good at massage (guys especially, we know who we are), you can increase the pleasure of a massage with oil or massage creme.  These not only tend increase sensual pleasure due to the smell, but are good for nourishing and moisturizing dry skin.

A massage with oil or creme eventually absorbs into the skin and leaves it feeling smooth, soft, and rejuvenated.

Treating Sunburns

Sunburns leave skin red, cracked, dry, and without treatment can cause serious irritation and discomfort.  The best way to prevent sunburns is to wear sunscreen, this will also work to prevent skin cancer.  However, if you have already been sunburned, sunscreen can also be used as a skin moisturizer and to protect the skin from further damage.  There are also products officially marketed as a skin moisturizer that will work better than sunscreen, but won’t protect against UV rays.  Vaseline works well as a skin moisturizer for extreme cases of sunburn, but in such cases it may also be wise to consult a physician.

Sunburn can be the cause for the development of serious medical conditions, so it’s best to avoid it whenever possible.  Tempting as it is to go outside without applying sunscreen, in this day and age, it’s risky.

How to battle dry skin

As the winter months draw ever closer, we’re reunited with that old enemy: dry skin. Here are some tried and true methods to ward off that old evil:

• Shorten bath and shower times; long periods in hot, steamy water can actually dry your skin out further
• Take cooler showers and baths
• Only use mild cleansers – harsh ones are too drying
• Exfoliate as needed, but don’t overdo it
• Pat yourself dry with a towel instead of rubbing
• Apply moisturizer and other dry skin care products immediately after showering to lock in that moisture
• Give extra attention to your lower legs; because they’re further away from the heart, they tend to dry out quicker
• Don’t scratch the dry, itchy spots; instead, apply more moisturizer
• Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air

Tips for exfoliating

exfoliation cremeWe all want dewy, radiant skin, but it doesn’t just happen. One of the best methods to refresh the skin is to exfoliate.

Exfoliating sloughs the upper layers of dead skin off the face, revealing bright, new skin. The average person generates a new layer of skin every two to four weeks, and if the dead skin isn’t removed, it can clog the pores and lead to acne, skin discolorations and blackheads.

One of the best methods is to use an exfoliation creme to scrub away the dead skin. Most creams have pieces of grit in them, such as walnut shells or apricots. Wet the face with warm water, gently scrub in circular motions, and rinse away to see beautiful skin. A word of caution though – don’t overdo it. Exfoliating too much can leave the skin red and flaky. The recommended number of times is twice per week, but if you have oily skin, you can exfoliate more often. If you have dry skin, it should be less often.

Taking Care of Dry Skin

Dry skin is a common problem.  Skin requires moisture to remain smooth and supple, and moisture retention becomes more difficult to achieve with aging.  The winter season causes the skin to lose its natural moisture, and daily bathing can remove skin’s overall moisture, despite initially hydrating the skin with the water.

Using the wrong lotion can also dry out the skin.   When it comes to dry skin care products, water-based lotions are often non-comedogenic (will not clog skin pores), but oil-based lotions and creams are more effective overall when it comes to maintaining natural skin moisture.

What is Rosewater?

rosewater hydrosol glycerin

Rosewater is a component of the distillate of rose petals and a by-product of the process of steam distilling crushed rose petals for rose perfumes. Rosewater has a unique flavor and is used to flavor food, especially sweets, in Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine.  In Iran, it is used in teas, ice creams and cookies, while in Arab cultures and India it is used to enhance milk and dairy-based dishes like puddings.  In Western Europe, rosewater is often used as an ingredient in marzipan and a French cookie known as a madeleine.   In certain regions of Europe and Asia, rosewater has religious purposes such as cleansing a holy Islam shrine in Mecca and as a component of several Hindu rituals.

Rosewater was very popular in the United States during the Victorian era, both in cooking and for its scent, and inspired the Victorian Nights product, which consists of rosewater hydrosol glycerin.  Today, rosewater is a popular spa skin treatment, frequently found in skin care products such as cosmetics and lotions, and is known as an effective, gentle astringent and toner, particularly for more mature skin.

One of the most noticeable effects of aging are the dark circles that appear around your eyes.  Despite its popular myth, dark circles aren’t always caused by lack of sleep; they are also caused by a poor diet and a constant rubbing of the eyes.  If you already find that you have a regiment that includes an anti-aging lotion for under your eyes, you may want to consider having a balanced diet.  Vitamins from certain vegetables and fruits will help rejuvenate youthful looks, in addition to having a healthy body.

Excessive alcohol consumption damages skin in two primary ways. One, alcohol will dilate the blood vessels, leading to chronic dilation of the capillaries, and a flush of the face. Under increased pressure, the stretched vessels may break, appearing as broken capillaries on the face. It may also be noted that it is known that alcohol consumption aggravates symptoms of patients with rosacea.

Two, alcohol interferes with the body’s processing of vitamin A.  The consumption of alcohol leads to a reduced absorption of vitamin A from the diet. Because vitamin A is a known antioxidant used in anti aging skin care, decreasing its absorption may lead to advanced aging.

No studies to date have been done investigating the efficacy and toxicity of topical retinoids in combination with alcohol consumption, so ask your dermatologist if you are concerned.
